When a parent has a child who participates in sports, many times if the sport starts to seemingly consume their lives, parents may ask themselves 'how much is too much?' The answer, unfortunately, is that 'it depends'. Sports can be a big part of someone's life, but if the person is very young, it is prominent that sports be balanced with regular school work and life. However, it should be pointed out that some athletic prodigies devote a principal number of time to their sport.
This would be the case of an Olympic gymnast or swimmer, or a high school star basketball players. These athletes are often working towards something in line with a sports career, and as such, spend a large part of their life working on that goal. It should be noted that some of these young athletes must work extremely hard to accomplish college scholarships or Olympic sponsorship, something that many non-athletes and people in general lives do not realize. Often these athletes rise well before dawn for workouts every day, consume exact diets and work with trainers and coaches several times a week.
Sports
Of course, the reality with most children is that no matter how much they may love their sport, they will probably not be playing it as a career. Even if the child is exceptional, they still should work on maintaining grades and have some other interests. Some parents worry that their child is too consumed with a sport, but if the child is able to keep their other areas in line, it should be suitable to have a serious interest in a sport. If, however, the child is starting to slip in other areas due to sports, it might be time to raise caution.
The request as to whether your child is participating in too much of a sport is tricky, and you must ask yourself if you were in your child's shoes, knowing what you know as an adult, would you feel it was too much?
