After less than one month use, it was getting more and more difficult to open the lock until one day, I spent more than 5 minutes trying to open it. I was lucky to be able to open it then because afterwards, I was never able to open the lock. If you purchase any Kryptonite product, there's a good chance of manufacturing defects. Customer service really does not care, because they know you won't pay for shipping to return a defective product. I emailed them photos clearly identifying an incorrectly manufactured bracket, asking for them to ship me a replacement, but they wouldn't do anything at all unless I first returned lock. Crooks. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY!! Don't get burned like me. Fist of all, yes the part that holds the lock to the frame is on backwards, with some maneuvering, it can be adjusted so it is the right way, or it can be easily removed. I just put it on my handle bars when I ride so it is not really a problem for me (but i see the appeal in the connivence).Now, about it being VERY STRONG:I do not live in the best part of town and I have had problems with my bike being damaged or stolen in the past, and got this lock to prevent aother bike from being stolen. One morning, I walked out to the bike rack of my apartment complex and saw something that astounded me. There were 6 hack saw blades on the ground around my bike, all of the teeth on the center most part of the blade were worn flat, and only full teeth remained on the edges. I then looked at my lock and saw they had only about 1/8th of an inch into the lock, with 6 hack saw blades. There were also several marks around the lock from where it looked like they had tried to take bolt cutters to start breaking the lock, but did no more than minimal damage. At some point they must have given up and left all the saw blades in frustration. If that doesn't make you want to buy this lock, I don't know what else would (beside the awesome price of course). let's not even mention that the clamp is on the wrong side, which although not a real "defect," makes this a pain in the ass clamp to your bike. also the clamp is probably too wide for a lot of frames, so you'll have to pad with additional material so it doesn't slip downward. most importantly, the quality of the metal is seriously awful. i've only been using the lock for about a week and it wouldn't stop sticking, and finally just completely froze. the key simply will not open the lock. spend your money on a better model, it'll be worth the extra cost It's heavy as hell, but it definitely won't break. I've been using it here in New York for about a month now and have had no issues. Much better than any cord lock (and still pretty cheap) Install it as shown beneath the photo, under the heading "Customer image from I. Xu." It takes about 30 seconds.Otherwise, it's a Kryptonite lock for about $20 that provides for $500 of anti-theft protection. That works for me. I suspect the mounting problems is more pebbar (problem exists between bike and rider) since this went on my bike within 5 minutes without any problems at all. It's not hard to look at your bike, look at the mount and figure it out. Now granted I have it mounted upright since that seemed like the most stable position and some people may not have room to mount it that way but honestly it mounts fine. You can do it, just mess around with it for a minute.The key is a little sticky at first but after a few turns it loosens up.I don't live in a super heavy crime area hence the basic need for this simple lock but if your bike is stolen it isn't kryptonite's fault. If someone wants a bike bad enough they'll get it. If you don't lock it properly and use a two-lock system you're just asking someone to take it from you. People are jerks, jerks who can't do puzzles. Based on reading other reviews, it seems like a fair amount of these locks are shipped with the clamp attachment on the side opposite to that shown in the photo. I received a lock with the clamp on the keyhole side. This placement means that it is impossible to hang the lock within the frame of the bike. You cannot move the clamp to the opposite side due to a metal bend on the opposite side of the U bar.You can still mount the lock but it will hang off to the side, and can catch your feet as you pedal!The lock itself seems sturdy, but the clamp issue is a big hassle. My awesome bike was stolen when I used this lock. What more do I need to say?
